SULAIMANIYA - After seven years of rivalry, two of Kurdistan’s major political parties have effectively decided to reunite, with the aim of creating a bulwark against acting President Massoud Barzani.

The move follows months of political drift in which Barzani has remained in post since the end of his term in August 2015, precipitating a crisis that debilitated Kurdistan's regional Parliament and led to the sacking of several Cabinet ministers.
