Kurds to join Cabinet despite deadlock

PM Abadi has stonewalled all of their demands so far, but top Kurdish leaders are setting aside preconditions and taking up posts in Baghdad.

ERBIL - Kurdish political leaders agreed Monday to participate in Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi's government, abandoning their determination to extract key policy demands before taking up posts in the federal Cabinet.

Hoshyar Zebari, formerly Iraq's Foreign Minister, will head the Ministry of Finance; Rowsch Shaways will continue to serve as one of three deputy prime ministers; and Fryad Rawanduzi will lead the Ministry of Culture. Three other ministries have been earmarked for other Kurdish parties, which have not identified their nominees.
