Ruined by war, Qayarah refinery could rise again
Before they were driven out of Qayarah, IS militants destroyed a refinery that powered the economy of Ninewa province. Now, it's a focal point in efforts to rebuild.Qayarah refinery, Nov. 22, 2016. (PATRICK OSGOOD/Iraq Oil Report)
QAYARAH - For decades, the Qayarah refinery was at the heart of the local economy: it provided asphalt to build roads around Ninewa province, its diesel output fueled a power plant next door, and it provided jobs for over 550 local residents.
But after two years of war and occupation by the Islamic State (IS) militant group, it is now a charred carcass of deformed steel. Because there is no fuel supply for the power plant, residents trying to resettle the nearby town of Qayarah have no electricity service and no running water.
