Baghdad slow-walks court fight on KRG oil policy
Prime Minister Abd al-Mahdi has again delayed a key legal filing, signaling an apparent desire to settle long-standing disputes through political negotiation rather than court battles.A federal delegation led by the two deputy prime ministers meets with KRG officials, led by Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, on July 25, 2019, in Erbil. BAGHDAD - Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abd al-Mahdi has once again declined to put his signature on a legal argument against the autonomous Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG) oil policy – a further sign that his administration is creating space for a political resolution to long-standing disputes.
Abd al-Mahdi's delay has now twice caused Iraq's Federal Supreme Court to postpone a decision in a landmark case in which it has been asked to adjudicate arguments about how to draw the lines of authority over the country's oil sector.
