UPDATE: Car bomb explodes near U.S. consulate in Erbil
Attackers did not penetrate consulate security or injure any American personnel, but at least three people were killed.

ERBIL - A car bomb exploded near the U.S. consulate in Erbil on Friday afternoon, killing at least three people.
The attack began at approximately 5:47 p.m. when a car sped toward a checkpoint manned by members of the Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG) Asayesh intelligence service, one block north of the main entrance of the consulate compound. Asayesh officers fired on the car, which detonated before reaching the compound, according to a KRG security official.
