Cross-border fuel pipeline delayed by Iranian, KRG bureaucratic tangle
Red tape and rivalries have prevented the startup of a short pipeline designed to improve the efficiency of the KRG's fuel imports from Iran while mitigating coronavirus risk.On the Iraqi side of the Parwezkhan border crossing, loading points where Iraqi tanker trucks can fill with fuel imported from Iran. KALAR - A pipeline project that is supposed to streamline fuel imports from Iran to Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdistan region has stalled amidst bureaucratic complications on both sides of the border.
“The pipeline project has been put on hold," said a senior official at the Parwezkhan border crossing, where the pipeline has been installed and is ready to operate. "Iran initially gave a green light to the project but now claims that they cannot complete the final stages of the work due to the Newroz [holiday] festivities. We don’t have a clear vision as to when the pipeline will come online. We have to wait and see Iran’s position after the Newroz holidays.”
