Election delayed until March 7

After tough election law bout in Parliament and a second veto by VP Hashimi averted at the 11th hour, Iraqi voters will have their say in March, only two months late.

BAGHDAD - Iraq's presidency council has chosen March 7 as the date for national elections, dismissing a proposed end of February timeframe pushed by the United Nations and election commission members.

It squeezes in the constitutionally mandated exercise in democracy about a week before the government would lose any legal legitimacy, though it is beyond the Jan. 31 deadline by which elections were supposed to take place.
