The Iraqi government is terminating its contract with the Ukranian company Ukrzemresurs to develop the Akkas gas field, drawing threats of a legal fight over the embattled project less than a year after the deal was signed.

Neither the Oil Ministry nor Ukrzemresurs has announced any change in the company's status at Akkas, but the Iraqi government's decision to end the contract was confirmed by two senior Oil Ministry officials, an Iraqi official at Akkas, a member of the Parliament Oil Committee who was briefed on the issue, and an industry official familiar with the project.
