January election in doubt

Stalled law governing the vote delays electoral commissions efforts to prepare, making Jan. 18 date more and more unlikely, as political tensions heat up.

BAGHDAD - The Iraqi High Electoral Commission is alluding to the improbability of holding elections on the current January 18 date, and possibly not in January at all, as political leaders carve out concessions from an election law set up for a second veto.

If it happens, the Parliament is likely ready to override it. Amendments made Monday and approved by Parliament have satisfied Iraq's Kurdish leaders, who claimed they were under served in the new voter rolls and seats allocated to an expanded Parliament.
