Kurdish security chief acknowledges violations

The head of one KRG security agency discusses human rights critics and explores the role of the agency in the future of Iraqi Kurdistan.

In recent years international organizations have issued a number of reports condemning human rights abuses allegedly committed by the Kurdish Asayish [security/intelligence] agencies. Niqash met Hakem Qader Hamah Jean, head of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) affiliated Asayish in Sulaimaniya, to shed light on these reports and to discuss the future role of the region’s intelligence agencies.

Niqash: Erbil and Sulaimaniya have been working on a common political agenda for five years but there are still two separate intelligence agencies linked to each city. Why have the two Asayish apparatuses not been united?
