KIRKUK - At least two attacks on Iraq's northern pipeline infrastructure have shut the export pipeline to Turkey, spilling crude into the Tigris River and threatening to contaminate a major source of water supply.

"The attack caused a huge leak of oil into the waters of the Tigris," said Mohammed Ahmed, the mayor of the city of Baiji, home to Iraq's largest refinery and a hotbed of militant activity in Salahaddin province. "It caused the shutdown of the main water supply in Baiji… The oil leaks are threatening the districts south of Tikrit, like Samara, Balad and others."
