North oil facilities face ongoing IS attacks

In the week after a Peshmerga offensive designed to insulate key oil infrastructure from IS threats, North Gas Company and the Khabbaz oil field have come under attack.

KIRKUK - The Islamic State (IS) militant group continues to attack oil infrastructure south of Kirkuk, despite a successful Peshmerga offensive last week that regained territory and pushed out the front lines.

Two bombs exploded early Wednesday near a non-operational oil well at the Khabbaz oil field, 25 kilometers southwest of Kirkuk city, causing only minor damage but highlighting the IS group's ongoing ability to threaten a facility that it briefly controlled in late January.
