UPDATE: Operation to liberate Mosul begins

BADANA GAWRA - The booming thud of outgoing artillery from the village of Shirkan on early Monday morning marked the start of Iraq’s operations to liberate Mosul from the so-called Islamic State (IS) militant group.
A dozen rounds fired toward Mosul at around 1 a.m. were followed by a televised statement by Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, who was flanked by generals, announcing that operations had begun.
