Payment confirmed, distrust continues

As Kurdistan receives $541 million from Baghdad – the first payment in a new export deal – a conflict is brewing over a second tranche.

Iraq's central government has taken a significant step toward building oil sector cooperation with Kurdistan, delivering $541 million to the semi-autonomous region and its oil contractors in recompense for past exports.

The payment was nearly two weeks late – a delay which highlighted persistent distrust. As recently as this past weekend, Kurdistan's contractors were threatening to cut exports if the money transfer wasn't successful.
