BASRA - As the Secretary General of Iraq's Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (IEITI), Alaa Mohie el-Deen is at the head of official attempts to bring transparency to Iraq's oil sector.
Deen, who is also the Inspector General of the Electricity Ministry, was appointed in 2010. Since then, IEITI has made "tremendous progress in challenging circumstances," according to Adam Smith International, the agency hired to assess Iraq's compliance to the international standards set down by the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) secretariat, an NGO based in Norway.
