CORRECTION: Due to an editing error, an earlier version of this story included introductory text incorrectly stating that only 10 of the IDC’s 43 rigs are currently in operation. In fact, 33 rigs are in operation, according to Abbas. The story has been updated.

BASRA - The state-run Iraqi Drilling Company (IDC) has historically been an important player in Iraq’s oil sector, competing with foreign drilling companies on price and helping to mitigate field development costs throughout the country.

At the moment, 33 of the company’s 43 rigs are in use, according to Khalid Hamza Abbas, the director general of the IDC, who gave an interview to Iraq Oil Report at his office in Basra.
