MOSUL - When Mansour Mareed Attia was elected governor of Ninewa province, in May 2019, he inherited a host of problems stemming from the destruction caused by the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) militant group.
Those challenges have been compounded by a fractious political climate. Attia assumed the post after the removal of former Gov. Naufel al-Akub, who was accused of corruption and blamed for the drowning deaths of over 100 people in a ferry accident.
