Q&A: Security Snapshot

Michael Knights of security firm Olive Groups explains the security trends in Iraq, with an eye on the energy sector.

The level of violence in Iraq today creates a semblance of normalcy compared to 2006 and 2007. But there are daily reminders of how much progress remains – roadside bombs, shootings, sticky bombs, suicide car and truck bombs. And when incidents such as the Aug. 19 twin bombings of the foreign and finance ministries occur, killing and wounding hundreds, that day of real normalcy seems far away.

There remains steady progress, especially in key areas such as the oil and gas sectors, where attacks have decreased dramatically.
