Rumaila production falls on fuel shortages

A temporary but dramatic drop in output at Iraq's most prolific oil field underscores the challenges of fighting natural reservoir decline and maintaining production.

BASRA - Fuel shortages at Iraq's most prolific oil field caused production to drop by more than 250,000 barrels per day (bpd) at the end of 2024, highlighting the immense challenges of fighting natural reservoir decline and maintaining output at Rumaila.

The field is foundational for the country's economy, accounting for nearly one-third of national oil output and government revenue — but for multiple months Rumaila has not received enough fuel to power critical equipment, according to four officials at the state-run Basra Oil Company (BOC), which oversees the field.
