Tigris towns shut off water to avoid oil contamination

More than a week after a major oil spill, authorities are still struggling to staunch the flow of a massive oil slick on Iraq's main waterway.

BAQUBA - Towns along the Tigris River have shut down water intake facilities – often the sole source of municipally delivered water – as crude continues to wash downstream following an Aug. 21 triple pipeline attack.

"It has been decided to shut down the water supply completely from the Tigris River," said Uday Al Khadran, the mayor of Khalis, located 15 kilometers northwest of Baquba, the capital of Diyala province.
